It’s that time of year as we plan for the holidays with easy and seasonal foods. That was this morning’s cooking segment at CBS affiliate WBTV News with Anchor John Carter.
Stromboli is a term meaning ‘turnover’ – a kind of inside out pizza, traditionally prepared with meats and cheeses. This is super-easy to prepare using a short-cut method of purchased frozen bread dough if you’re in a hurry, in can be prepared in minutes. Or, of course, you can make your own bread dough, if you prefer. (Page 22 of ‘MaMa Mia Cucina’)
Pepperoni Stromboli can be prepared any time of year, but looks especially festive when served in a ‘wreath form’ as demonstrated below with lettuces, tomatoes, broccoli or rosemary for presentation. (refer to video)
Pepperoni Stromboli
1 frozen bread dough loaf, thawed
OR for the homemade pizza dough, page 22 ‘MaMa Mia Cucina’
3 – 4 oz. sliced pepperoni
3 – 4 slices provolone cheese
sprinkling of dried oregano
1 egg, beaten
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. On a baking sheet, spread the dough into a rectangle approximately 8 x 12 inches in size. Layer with a row of cheese and then cover entirely with pepperoni, leaving approximately 1/2 inch of an edge on each of the 4 sides. Sprinkle with oregano.
Beginning with the long end, fold the edge over and begin to roll jelly-roll style until completely rolled. Pinch the seam until sealed. On each end, fold over and pinch to close.
Place on a greased baking sheet and brush with the beaten egg. Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting. Slice & Serve.
